Your Library Card

If you have questions or concerns after you’ve read what follows, drop into your local branch or give them a call. A library staff member would be happy to see you and answer your questions or help resolve your concerns.

Get a free library card

Get carded at the library

Drop into your local library branch with identification showing your name and address. In addition to a name ID (student TTC card) you need to bring address ID. Examples of ID that will work:

  • current telephone or other utility bill
  • valid driver’s licence
  • current letter from a teacher verifying your Toronto address
  • recent report card with current address
  • green health card with current address on it
  • current student TTC card plus any of the above.

If you aren’t sure what to bring along, call the local branch and check with staff.

With a library card, you can

  • borrow books, CDs, CD ROMs, magazines, for 3 weeks
  • borrow DVDs, videos, and Best Bets for 7 days
  • place holds on books, CDs, DVDs, videos to be delivered to your local library 
  • reserve library computers
  • access internet and magazine article databases in the library
  • access full text magazine articles online from home
  • pay your fines if you’re late
  • pay for printing and photocopying
  • renew borrowed materials by phone or online

Use your library card wisely

Your card may be suspended if you have:

  • more than 10 items overdue
  • more than $10 in fines/charges
  • one or more items that are more than 6 weeks overdue
  • any fine or charge that is more than 6 weeks old
  • more than 10 items you’ve told us you returned but we can’t locate

Your card is yours only – your friends cannot use it.

If your card is lost or stolen, let us know immediately. We’ll cancel it so that no one else can use it. The replacement charge is $2.

 Overdue fines for teens

Teens 13-17 years-old returning overdue books on or after September 7, 2005 no longer pay adult (18 years-old and older) fines. 

  • new fine is 15 cents per item per day 
  • maximum fine is  $6 per item per loan period
