 In October 2006, Evergreen, the youth branch of Yonge Street Mission launched The Best of the Street, a zine of poetry by Evergreen street youth published by Toronto Public Library.
The edgy and gritty poems were created, in 2005, through a weekly writing workshop at Evergreen, conducted by author Teresa Toten. Four years ago, Toronto Public Library sponsored Toten to start the workshops. She enjoyed the experience so much, that she volunteers to continue the workshops today.
Copies of the zine will be distributed to youth shelters and centres across the city, including Covenant House. Copies will also be included in the Toronto Public Library collection. Download a digital copy of the zine here.
